Whether a Fortune 500 company or a local mom-and-pop store, a megalopolis with millions of residents or a less-populated municipality in the heart of the U.S., the threat of cybersecurity is real. And it isn’t going away.
That and other challenges keep Joe Currier on his toes as Sedgwick County, Kansas’s chief information security officer, which includes the state’s most populous city, Wichita.

“Without a doubt, cybersecurity is our biggest challenge,” Currier tells Toggle magazine during an interview in July. As the county’s newly appointed CISO, Currier and his team stand as one of the first lines of defense in the county’s ever-present battle against bad actors looking to breach important county systems and steal important county information.
Currier’s move to CISO underscores the county’s focus on cybersecurity and allows him to directly oversee the IT security team. This strategic move is part of a broader effort to bolster Sedgwick County’s defenses against cyber threats.
Currier says a team of four highly skilled professionals is poised to tackle these challenges. The county can retain this talented workforce by offering a competitive benefits package and a work environment conducive to collaboration. Remote work is a significant perk for employees, and the supportive environment is key to maintaining a robust and motivated team, Currier says.
Staying vigilant
With cybersecurity as his primary focus, Currier has ambitious plans to keep the county secure.
“We will push more on our training programs, looking to add optional training and information sharing with frequent tips and tricks highlighting the latest trends in security,” Currier explains.
By continuously educating and updating staff, Currier aims to create a proactive culture of cybersecurity awareness within the county.
The county has approximately 3,000 full-time employees, including the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Communications, EMS and collaborative networks.
“We cover everything from A to Z, from the appraiser’s office to the zoo,” Currier says.
Preparation is a cornerstone of Currier’s approach to his role. As Sedgwick County gears up for the transition to Microsoft 365, Currier’s foresight is evident. He has worked with third-party vendors to support the transition and ensure everyone within the county is set to implement and use the new platform successfully.
“This careful planning has allowed for seamless testing and integration, ensuring a smooth transition for the entire county,” he says.
Future vision
Currier’s journey into technology began in his youth, inspired by his father, who introduced him to early computer games like Microsoft Flight Simulator. His fascination with technology led him to a career path that has been anything but linear.
Raised in Santa Fe, Texas, Currier joined the Army in 1996 as a logistician. After his service, he ventured into web development, only to be thwarted by the dot-com bust. This setback led him to Universal Computer Systems in Houston, where he honed his skills until another call to service sent him to Iraq with the National Guard.
“In the military, I learned how to make decisions under pressure, to lead diverse teams, adaptability, discipline, and accountability,” Currier says. “Working in IT security is fast-paced as the attack methods constantly change with high stakes, such as the costs of recovery and public perception.”
Upon his return, Currier’s path led him to Sedgwick County, where he steadily climbed the ranks from Customer Support Analyst to his current role as CISO. Along the way, he embraced every opportunity for growth, guided by advice encouraging him to speak up and ask questions until doubts were erased.
His pride matches Currier’s professional achievements in his family. His three children have carved their own successful paths, with his daughter working in the travel industry, his son Austin thriving as a mechanic, and his youngest, Aedan, excelling as a prominent editor for popular YouTube creators.
Outside of work, Currier’s interests are as diverse as his career. An artist at heart, he has learned to tattoo and enjoys motorcycle riding and crafting. From laser engraving to 3D printing, Currier’s creative pursuits reflect his love for making things.
“I’ve had great teammates and staff to support me in being successful. It’s important to be mindful of pride and be humble, not to build your self-image from what you do for work. Find the balance,” he says.
